My Journey:
Life has presented me with profound challenges, shaping the person I am today and the empathy I bring to others.
From a young age, I faced bullying and harassment due to my unique personality, learning difficulties, and body image. These experiences were deeply isolating, yet somehow, they strengthened my resilience.
Family life was marked by intense struggles. My sister, who was wrongfully diagnosed with mental illnesses and prescribed incorrect medications caused an adverse reaction.
She suffered through domestic violence that led to repeated hospitalisation… She felt there was no escape from this violent and verbally abusive relationship.
Tragically, after surviving a horrific car accident, dragging herself back into her wrecked car with a broken neck and numerous injuries, after several operations she sadly succumbed to complications. The decision my parents had to make to remove her from life support remains one of the most heartbreaking moments of our lives.
My son lost his father to murder when he was just two years old. During my teen years, I supported his father through drug-related issues, violence, a prison sentence, and efforts at rehabilitation. This period brought me face-to-face with immense adversity, including court systems and experiences that no teenager should endure.
In 2010, my health took a devastating turn when diagnosed with Glandular Fever and Ross River virus. The fatigue and pain disrupted every aspect of my life, leading to feelings of failure and the collapse of relationships. Later, being diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, Sjogren's Syndrome, and Rheumatoid Arthritis further compounded my struggles. The relentless symptoms and lack of understanding from others made me feel utterly lost and worthless.
Through the dedication of a compassionate medical team, I’ve regained some control over my life. While flare-ups still occur, their unwavering support has given me hope and strength to move forward.
The loss of my mother to suicide in 2013 left a lasting scar. Watching her on life support felt like pieces of my soul were being taken away. Overwhelmed by grief, I spiralled into alcoholism, drug use, and suicidal ideation. One night, I attempted to take my own life. Surviving that moment became a turning point, pushing me toward seeking help and finding meaning in my pain.
After my father was diagnosed with cancer, I moved back to my family grounds supporting him in any way that I could for several years. I found purpose as his full-time carer during his final weeks, passing peacefully in his home on October 5, 2023.
Losing both parents and my sister has left me feeling like an "orphan" at 47, as one social worker insensitively put it. However, it has deepened my determination to treat others with dignity and compassion.
Despite these immense events, I’ve discovered strength and resilience in my journey
